Unit-Death of a Salesman

Today's Agenda:

  • We are going to take a break from the play.
  • Even though the play was written in the late 1940s, we are going to transition to the 1950s (a very popular and idealized American decade!)
  • Here is the assignment for our analysis of the 1950s. We have technology scheduled for today and today only so you must be diligent.

Unit-Post War America/Death of a Salesman

Amidst the "Post-War Optimism" we talked about yesterday, there was a pervasive feeling of unease that was bubbling under the surface. Our next unit, where we study American life in the late 40s/early 50s, will explore these ideas; as well as thoughts on the "perfect American family," the "American Myth," and American consumerism. This will be done through reading Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman, a play that ushered in a new era of theatre.

Our agenda today:

New Unit-WWII

Today's Agenda:

  • Brainstorm: What do we already know about WWII, and what do we what/need to know?
  • Discuss: Popular vs. Unpopular Wars, what's the difference?
  • Analyze: Foreign Policy in the 1930s (Historical Hypothetical Question: Could the United States have prevented the Holocaust if acting sooner than 1941?)

Optional: Why is Republican Presidential candidate being compared to Nazi leader Adolph Hitler? Is that a fair comparison?
